Tame the Floof: The Ultimate Doodle Grooming Guide in El Paso

Doodles – whether Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Aussiedoodles or any of the poodle mixes – have taken El Paso by storm. These “floofy” pups are adored for their teddy-bear looks and low-shedding coats. But any doodle parent will tell you: all that fluff doesn’t take care of itself! Doodles are high-maintenance in the grooming department. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by mats or unsure how to keep your doodle looking dapper in the desert, you’re in the right place. This ultimate guide will help you tame the floof and keep your doodle comfortable and cute year-round.

Why Doodle Coats Need Frequent Grooming

Doodles are bred from Poodles, which means most inherit some version of that curly, non-shedding coat. While that’s great for minimizing hair around the house, it also means the coat traps dirt, oils, and debris more easily than other breeds and it doesn’t shed out naturally. Combine that with long, soft fur and a love for rolling around outside, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for mats, tangles, and build-up. Without regular brushing and bathing, those tangles can tighten into painful mats that pull at the skin and create ideal conditions for irritation and infection.

How Often Should You Groom a Doodle?

One of the most common questions doodle owners ask is, “How often do I really need to groom this dog?” The answer: more often than a typical short-haired breed. Professional groomers generally recommend a full groom (bath, haircut, etc.) about every 4–6 weeks for doodles. Some may stretch to 8 weeks, but going much beyond that usually means the coat starts matting and the trim will need to be cut shorter.

In between those grooming appointments, at-home maintenance is key. Ideally, you should be brushing your doodle at least 3 times a week (and many doodle parents do a quick brush-out daily). Regular brushing prevents tangles from turning into mats. Think of it this way: a few minutes of brushing each day can save your pup from hours of dematting later, which no one enjoys.

Bathing at home can be done every few weeks if your dog gets dirty or smelly, but be sure to brush thoroughly before and after baths. Water can tighten any existing tangles. A well-brushed, clean coat will stay mat-free longer. Use a gentle dog shampoo and perhaps a conditioner to keep those curls soft and easier to comb through.

Also, don’t forget the small stuff as part of grooming frequency:

  • Nail trims about every 4 weeks (often aligned with grooming appointments).

  • Ear cleaning every couple of weeks, because doodles can grow hair in their ear canals that traps wax. (Your groomer can pluck or trim ear hair if needed, and keep the ears clean to prevent infections.)

  • Teeth brushing weekly, if you can – while not coat-related, overall grooming includes dental care to keep your doodle healthy and their breath fresh!

Brushing and Detangling 101

Brushing is the cornerstone of doodle coat care. Here are tips to do it right:

  • Use the right tools: A slicker brush and a metal comb are must-haves. Start with the slicker to go through the coat, then use the comb to find any hidden tangles. If the comb can’t pass through, a tangle is present that needs more work.

  • Get down to the skin: It’s important to brush all the way to the base of the hair, not just the top layer. Doodle fur is often thick, so you might need to work in sections. Lift a portion of hair, brush the hair underneath, then let more hair down (this is called “line brushing”). You want to avoid that fluffy topcoat hiding mats underneath.

  • Be gentle but thorough: If you encounter a knot, don’t rip through it (ouch!). Hold the fur close to the skin to avoid pulling the skin, and gently work the tangle out with the brush or comb. For stubborn mats, you can use a dematting tool or spray-on conditioner/detangler to ease the process. Patience is key.

  • High-risk areas: Pay extra attention to behind the ears, under the chin, the tummy, and legs. These spots mat fast. Many owners opt to keep fur a bit shorter in these areas for that reason.

  • Reward your dog: Make brushing a positive experience. Give treats or praise as you go, especially if your doodle is still getting used to grooming. A chewy treat or toy to lick can distract them during brushing sessions.

  • Watch for burrs or foxtails: If your doodle has been romping around the Franklin Mountains or even just the backyard, check for plant material in their coat. Burrs, grass awns, and other sticky seeds can tangle in fur and even pierce the skin. Remove any of these right away – another reason regular brushing is important.

Professional Grooming: What to Expect for Your Doodle

No matter how diligent you are at home, professional grooming is a must for doodles to keep their coat manageable. When you bring your doodle to The Fur Seasons: Pet Hotel & Grooming (or any experienced groomer), here’s what you can expect:

  • Consultation: Especially for first-timers, our groomers will discuss what haircut you’d like for your doodle. Do you prefer a classic “teddy bear” look (fluffy round face, moderate length all over)? A shorter sporty cut for easier upkeep? Perhaps a poodle-inspired style with a pom-pom tail? Feel free to bring photos or describe your ideal look. We’ll also assess the coat’s condition (any mats?) and your dog’s lifestyle to recommend what’s best.

  • Prep and Bath: We start by brushing out any tangles (we’ll do our best with minor mats – if there are major ones, we’ll let you know if a shorter cut is necessary). Then your doodle gets a luxurious bath with shampoo chosen for their coat type. We often use a deep conditioning mask on doodle coats – this extra step rehydrates the curls and helps prevent tangles, leaving the fur silky-soft.

  • Drying: Doodles are usually fluff-dried by hand with a high-velocity dryer while being brushed (this helps straighten the curls slightly for an even trim and blows out any loose under-hair). Don’t worry – our team is gentle and many dogs find the warm dryer and brushing quite relaxing. We make it a stress-free spa experience.

  • The Haircut: Now the real styling begins. Our groomers will trim your doodle according to the agreed-upon style. We use clippers with guard combs for much of the body work (to achieve a uniform length), and scissors for detail areas like the face, feet, and tail. We take care around sensitive areas and make sure your pup looks adorable. Those eyes will be visible again after we trim around the face!

  • Finishing Touches: Grooming isn’t just about the fur. We’ll clean the ears, trim the nails (and buff them so they’re smooth), and even brush your dog’s teeth if you’ve requested it. Some doodle parents also opt for our Blueberry Facial add-on – it’s a tear-free, blueberry-infused face scrub that gently cleans the fur around the muzzle and eyes (helps with tear-stain and smells yummy too!). Finally, we’ll spritz a bit of dog-safe cologne or coat conditioner for a finishing touch, and voila – your doodle is ready to dazzle.

  • Post-groom Advice: We’ll let you know how your dog did, mention any problem areas (like if we found an irritated spot under a mat), and advise on how to keep them looking great. Don’t be shy about asking for brushing tips or tool recommendations – we’re happy to share our knowledge so you can maintain the groom.

At The Fur Seasons, we actually have special Doodle & Poodle Grooming Packages (you might notice on our menu) designed to give these curly-coated friends the extra attention they need. We love grooming doodles – our team stays updated on the latest doodle trim styles and techniques, so your pup will always be in style!

Extra Tips for Doodle Parents in El Paso

  • Start young: If you have a doodle puppy, introduce them to grooming early. Bring them for a “puppy trim” or even just a bath and nail trim to get used to the salon. Early positive experiences make a huge difference in how they handle grooming as adults.

  • Keep it cool in summer: El Paso summers are scorching. Consider a slightly shorter cut for your doodle in the hottest months for comfort. However, avoid shaving them down to the skin – doodles (especially those that are half Golden Retriever or similar) still benefit from a bit of coat for sun protection. Our groomers can recommend a good summer length.

  • Stay on schedule: It can be tempting to postpone a grooming appointment if your doodle looks “okay” at 6 weeks, but stretching too long might lead to mats sneaking in. Consistency is easier on your dog and keeps their coat always in good shape. Pro tip: book your next appointment when you pick up your dog from the groomer. That way you have it on the calendar.

  • Between groom touch-ups: You can do mini maintenance at home. For example, carefully trim any hair hanging into your dog’s eyes in between grooms (if you feel comfortable) or ask your groomer to show you how. Keep sanitary areas (around the bum) clean with occasional trimming if needed. These little touch-ups can extend the life of the groom.

  • Hydration and diet: Because of our dry climate, ensure your doodle drinks plenty of water. A high-quality diet rich in omega fatty acids will help keep their skin moisturized and coat healthy, which means less frizz and matting. You might even add a vet-recommended fish oil supplement for skin & coat health.

  • Exercise and play: What does this have to do with grooming? Well, a doodle that gets lots of playtime might roll in the dirt or get slobbery with other dogs – just be prepared to brush out the day’s adventures! It’s all part of doodle parent life. Keeping a spray-on coat conditioner at home can help with post-play detangling.
